ASTM D1922

Standard Test Method for Propagation Tear Resistance of Plastic Film and Thin Sheeting by Pendulum Method

Test Materials

The ASTM D1922 specifies the use of flexible plastic films or paper materials for the Elmendorf Tear Test. The test is typically conducted on materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and various types of paper, which are cut into standard specimen sizes for consistent testing.

Test Process

In the ASTM D1922 procedure, the test material is clamped in the Elmendorf tear tester, and a pendulum is released to strike the specimen. The amount of energy required to initiate a tear is measured, giving an indication of the material’s tear resistance. The test must be performed at controlled conditions to ensure accuracy.

Test Result Interpretation

The results of the ASTM D1922 test are typically expressed in tear resistance units, representing the energy required to propagate a tear. Higher tear resistance values indicate stronger, more durable materials. These results are crucial for assessing the suitability of materials for packaging, especially in applications requiring strength and durability.
