TAPPI T549

Coefficients of static and kinetic friction of uncoated writing and printing paper by use of the horizontal plane method

Test Materials

TAPPI T549 specifies uncoated writing and printing paper as the primary material for testing. The paper samples are used to determine friction coefficients by sliding against each other, simulating practical conditions.

Test Process

The test employs a horizontal plane and a weighted sled to measure friction. Static friction is determined by the force required to start movement, while kinetic friction is measured as the force needed to maintain uniform motion. A precise speed of 150 ± 30 mm/min is maintained during the test using specialized equipment.

Test Result Interpretation

The coefficients of static and kinetic friction are calculated based on the resistance encountered during the sled’s movement. These results are crucial for evaluating paper handling characteristics, such as stackability and feed reliability in printing or packaging systems.
