ASTM D2732

Standard Test Method for Unrestrained Linear Thermal Shrinkage of Plastic Film and Sheeting

Test Materials

ASTM D2732 applies to plastic films and sheets up to 0.76 mm thick. These materials are tested to evaluate their shrinkage properties, typically used for process control or quality assurance in manufacturing.

Test Process

A specimen is prepared, typically 100×100 mm, and carefully placed in a controlled temperature bath for 10 seconds to reach thermal equilibrium. During this time, the film undergoes unrestricted shrinkage. The dimensions before and after exposure are measured in both longitudinal and transverse directions. The percent shrinkage is calculated using the initial and final dimensions.

Test Result Interpretation

The shrinkage percentage indicates the material’s thermal response and its suitability for specific applications. Consistent shrinkage values help determine the stability and performance of the film during use.
